Original Item. Only One Available. One of the most attractive uniform pieces from the Indian War period is absolutely the M1885 Mounted Greatcoat. This is a gorgeous original example and even retains its original yellow-interior cape, denoting that the soldier is in the Cavalry.
The greatcoat retains all of its U.S. general service eagle buttons, which have normal shields in the center instead of a letter denoting branch or company. There is a General Quartermaster Stamp in the interior left shoulder, but it is too faded to read any dates, just the numbers 92-93, which we assume is either a size marking or issue date, for 1892-1893. The opposite shoulder has a Costume house stamp, which is very commonly found on attractive uniforms of this period, being used for films & plays with military settings in the 20th century. There is also a size stamp, 56.
The Cavalry cape is fully yellow-lined and retains its buttons. The cape attaches to the greatcoat under the collar via several clips, but the far right clip has unfortunately torn off. This isn’t much of an issue, as it is still attached via the 5 other clips.
This is an extremely scarce example of a well-known and attractive Indian Wars era overcoat. Comes ready for further research and display!
